Getting ready to move right now and facing this decision. First to go...All the paperbacks are hitting ebay. I just don't reread often enough to keep them. The only paperbacks that get to stay are those which are still being written (trilogies and series) because sometimes I'll reread if it's been a long gap between books. Wish I could take them all but I made the ultimate decision to clear shelf space. I'm moving to the middle of nowhere and will probably spend a lot of time reading and refilling shelves.
I always have to make sure I bring enough books to keep me occupied. Since I am a very fast reader, this can make packing for long trips problematic...it's gotten better since I've been writing more, since paper and pencils (or the laptop) pack rather better than books. But I still will always have two bags: one for the clothes and such, and another for the books.
Beware of TSA agents who figure "hey, it's a hard solid object, it doesn't require any delicate handling." And who are perplexed by books in bags and tend to open them ... and not always zip them closed again. I have taken to including a note on top of my stuff, with books mixed in with laundry and such, that says, "thanks for handling books with respect and care." Dunno if it makes a difference, but it makes me feel better.
