Being the goddess of planning that I am, I have chosen the hottest week of the year to finish the book cull, acquire and assemble new bookcases, and rearrange the furniture in the writing room. In a house without A/C.

And now for the question of the day. When you get a new boockase--

Yeah, I make sure it's secured to not just the wall, but a stud.

You see, I've got three kids.

'Nuff said.

The walls in my building (ca 1957) are concrete. YOU try bolting things to it...

(on the plus side, it stays cool for the first two days of a heat wave, and the sound bleed is almost nil...)

I never bought a bookcase that had to be (or even could be) secured to a wall. I suspect if I did, I would not bother, unless I had small kids in the house. Mike is right about that one! Another advantage for ebooks! -)

My inexpensive dining room hutch has a strap for wall attachment. It's not top-heavy, and the base is quite a bit wider. I'm not saying it's impossible to tip the thing, but you would really have to try.

Strapping furniture to walls. What's next? Nailing chairs to the floor?

Sometimes is really the answer. If there is a baseboard and shoe mold, I also sometimes shim the bookcases so they are leaning back against the wall. Duct tape has also been used in a loop around the top shelf or in an L shape.

We planned to... but the bookcases need to be stained... and right now they're sort of filled with books... so we can't take them out of the room to stain them... oops?

I have a vague sense that I ought, but only because those closer to fault lines do, and few places are completely earthquake safe.

Um, supposed to? Consumed with guilt at least 4 times a day that I haven't yet secured bookshelves to wall? Fully intend to, before small child is at 'pull the bookshelves down upon himself' age?

I think this weekend's project just announced itself...

If it's a big bookcase that's nice and stable, I don't. But a more slender bookcase, one that is just deep enough to hold the books and not at all stable? Oh yeah, that baby is secured. The one in my bedroom fell once, and while no one was under it at the time, the resulting mess was enough to convince me.

I'd rather have cool and quiet than walls you can bolt things into...

I've bought many bookcases over the years, but this is the first time the instructions specified securing it to a wall. Not that I did so....

I've never bothered, but my answer would be different if I had small children in the house.

I'm replacing the badly finished and stained bookcases from 20 years ago that I always meant to restain, but never got around to, because, of course, they were full of books...

Well they seem stable, and I've never had problems in the past with any of my other bookcases. But if I had small children or pets I'd have to rethink this.

This is the first time I've bought a bookcase where the instructions insisted that you should do so. I was quite puzzled.

Like [livejournal.com profile] jpsorrow who uses bookcases to divide his loft space into living sections. It's a very cool look, by the way.

Yikes! I've never had a bookcase fall on me (knocks on wood.) Everything seems stable, and I'm always sure to load light on the top shelf and heaviest stuff on the bottom shelves.

In a future life I will have a minion who handles all these details for me.
