I'm that smidgen older than you are-- when I was an undergrad, I would occasionally earn spare cash by typing papers for people. On my manual typewriter. Computer terminals were for writing software and using the primitive campus e-mail system. And playing Zork, of course, but it was all text based and worked just as well on a printing terminal as it did on a display screen.
I've thought before about how much a wordprocessor is part of my writing process--I'm not someone who enjoys writing huge chunks by hand, instead I like being able to type a sentence five or six times till I get it right, then move on.
If I was living back forty years ago, when typewriters were the gold standard, I'd be a different kind of writer.
