not broken

according to the x-rays taken yesterday, my right hand is not in fact broken. however, i have been advised of the important safety tip--

if you are washing an item of heavy crockery and if that item slips do not attempt to catch it, just let it go. since i didn't actually catch it, instead it landed on my hand and smashed that into the stainless steel sink. oops.

hand is still only semi-functional, thus loss of caps key. rest/ice/elevate/tylenol regime and wait a few days to see if it improves. it's not particularly painful but certain motions feel really weird and although visible bruising is minimal there are parts that hurt to touch.

and did i mention that i've just started the busiest time of the month at the dayjob? lots of programs to run, databases to update, and othe misc typing in my future....

Last night I woke abruptly from a dream in which I was reading the revision letter for the manuscript I'd sent in earlier this month. In the letter, my editor gently pointed out that I'd inserted a huge chunk of fanfic in the middle of the book, and I should be prepared to cut that section. She didn't think that we could get licensing rights for that property--particularly since I'd killed off one of their main characters.

I called my editor to discuss and informed her that the character in question NEEDED TO DIE. The ever-patient Anne agreed, and then pointed out, once again, the issue of licensing.

I awoke half-convinced that I had indeed received that revision letter and it took a while for me to realize that it was all part of a dream. When the heavy plow came down the road on its second pass, I realized that this was probably what had originally awoken me.

I can't remember which TV show the dream referenced--it might have been Heroes or CSI. But I'm pretty darn sure that there isn't a chunk of fanfic in the manuscript I sent, and I know I haven't killed off anyone else's characters. Despite how much they need to die.

I suppose it just goes to show what the mind will come up with when it's fretting. There's nothing quite like that awful silence between the time you deliver a manuscript and the time you get your first feedback--especially when it's a project where you're not sure if it worked or not. It's a bit like that moment where you slam into an obstacle and you're waiting for the pain to register to figure out how badly you're hurt. Now just imagine that moment stretching out for weeks....

Optimism. It's for other people.

I had great plans for this week. So far I'm batting zero.

First, since this is traditionally a quiet week at work, I thought I'd take a few half days and get some mid-week biking in. It rained all day yesterday, and heavy rain is forecast for the rest of the week, thus putting a literal damper on those plans.

Related to the rain, I did my morning check of the basement. Not really surprised to see that water is seeping in, given the ground saturation. However there is a large puddle around the hot water heater-- a place where a) I haven't previously had water issues and b) I've been keeping an eye on the water heater for the past six months now, suspecting it is about to reach end of useful life. Of course now I can't tell the source of the puddle, so I put markers around it and will have to go home at lunch to try and figure things out.

I have not so fond memories of the the last time I had to deal with a water heater. The heater lost structural integrity the morning of July 4th--when plumbing services were at their special holiday premium price.

On a subsequent July 4th I had guests at my house when the sole toilet backed up, resulting in an emergency trip to the store to buy a plunger. The cashier couldn't control her laughter.

Needless to say, I'm now a tad twitchy about the fourth of July and plumbing issues....

ETA: Today's Dilbert offers a helpful sugestion on how to pay for plumbing repairs.

ETA 2: Careful observation this afternoon reveals that water heater was not source of water. Puddles continue to retreat due to fan & dehumidifier both running on full blast. Rain is once more falling so I may start losing ground again. I'd like to offer my personal thanks to town for picking this week to work on the storm sewers on my street....
