Turns out the Yellowstone supervolcano is 2.5 times larger than previously thought (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-25312674). mizkit and I agree this calls for a new Syfy movie, in the tradition of Supervolcano, Super Eruption, etc. All we need is to file the serial numbers off an old script, throw in a handful of sharks a la Sharknado, and we're good to go. We could probably write the whole thing in an afternoon.

This post started as a joke, but now I'm halfway convinced that we could do this, and get Syfy to buy the movie rights.

We're pretty close to a pitch letter over on twitter, though we've now added a subplot with grizzlies menancing tourists (bears were mutated by eating GMO salmon), and a scene with a picnic basket containing marmalade.

I guess I'll have to miss that. I post to Twitter, but following it overwhelms me.

I follow a small number of people, and I'm fairly random about when I check in. Sometimes I don't log on for a few days.

Fred Pohl used the supervolcano as a set-up to the society in his last novel -- not that that would prevent anyone from using it again.

Especially not in a disaster movie.

(But I wouldn't go see it, and I don't think I'd enjoy writing the script.)

I'm sure it could be done well, but if we're aiming for Syfy, home of Sharknado and Megapython vs Gatoroid, we'd basically launch with Supervolcano, throw in stock characters, add a subplot with mutant bears or sharks, or perhaps sentient salmon, and we're good to go.

If you agree to add dinosaurs, I'll co-write :-)
