Nothing like a 6AM phone call that starts with "I'm okay but..." to get your heart racing.

My friend Stacey was stung by a wasp while taking a spinning class this morning. Since she's allergic, she used her epi-pen and was then driven to the ER to be checked out. Knowing that I'd be up and working, she called me so someone would know what was happening. Everything turned out fine, the epi-pen worked, she was discharged from the ER, and I picked her up and brought her back to her car.

But my own plans to go to the gym this morning have been put on hold--I'm going to give them a few days to deal with the infestation. Apparently quite a few wasps have been spotted in the past week, and after this morning's drama, they've hopefully realized this is a problem that needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later.

Eep. I'm glad she's all right, but I second your decision to stay away until the wasps have all gone.

Yeah, not a friend of stinging insects. It's funny, she had the epipen in her bike bag all summer in case she got stung while we were riding on the road, and it turns out the real danger spot was the gym.

Precisely! I mean, it's one thing when your dog kicks up a nest and you get stung by multiple bees (which happened to her earlier this year, and thus the discovery that she's highly allergic and needs an epipen.) But it's another thing entirely to be at the gym and be attacked. I mean, there ought to be rules about insects attacking people at a 5AM spin class--those people are already suffering enough :-)

Good thing for Epipens. We've got several around the house (peanut allergy), and while we haven't had to use them, it's nice to know they're around.

The world has changed so much since I was a kid-- my sister once needed an emergency tracheotomy, for a reaction that today could be fended off with an epipen.

My allergies tend toward projectile vomiting, which is suitably dramatic, but less likely to end up in an ER.

gah, glad to hear she is ok - but yeah, the possibility of a wasp attack while working out pumps out the adrenaline level just a bit too much.
