Hypothetically speaking, if I were to buy a Nintendo DS Lite as a gift for someone, what kinds of games do they buy for it? Just regular Nintendo DS titles? Anything special I should know?

My last foray into the world of handheld videogames was quite a long, long time ago. A donkey's (kong's) years, at it were.

Advice?

I want a DS just so I can play Scribblenauts. So my vote is to get them Scribblenauts.

Just regular Nintendo DS titles.

The DS Lite is just more lightweight, I think.

My son has one and it uses standard DS games - the DS Lite is just thinner and less expensive.

Buy a DSi (it's the one with wireless, so it's the future of gameing...it's all going to go to downloads) - http://www.nintendodsi.com/

And then game recs (good ones) - http://hubpages.com/hub/Top-10-Nintendo-DSi-Games

Plus, you can download free ones (once this is in the owner's hands):

Don't ask me. Our most recent console is an Intellivision II.

(No, seriously. We got it about four years ago off of eBay with close to 40 games. I always wanted one as a kid, you see, and...)

I haven't had a TV console since the 1980s. And the last time I owned a handheld was around the same time.

Heck the last computer game I played (besides card games or Mahjong) was Myst...when it was brand new.

Hmm... Myst.

Been ages since I've thought of that game.

I've never played it, but then I was into the Ultima series at the time.

I sell these all day :D

Lites are just the 'basic' console, so they play all regular DS games. You can't really get the 'original' (fat and heavy) DS consoles anymore unless you buy them second hand; the Lites replaced these.

Though, the new console is the DSi, which will also play all the regular games, but starting next year Nintendo will be slowly beginning to release new titles as DSi games which will not be compatible with the Lite. Plus some games will start coming out as 'DSiWare' which you download directly to the DSi (plus the DSi has the funky cameras and photo tools that can be good for a chuckle or two XD).

DS are my favourite consoles; I get fidgety and bored when not at home and since I can't write well/long by hand to take writing notes (ow ;;) my DS is my best friend XD My Lite is on its way out though so I'll probably be buying a DSi very shortly.

Ultimately, I would much more recommend a DSi for longevity; Lites are cheap now and will get cheaper, but now that there is new hardware out, it won't be too much longer before the game developers start supporting DSi titles more than regular DS ones -- much like how it's going with the PS2.

Thanks for the info, this is good to know. As a civilian (non-game player) I couldn't figure out the difference between the various options out there.
