Drove up to Best Buy in Ithaca so I could test out netbooks, but after deciding that yes, I liked the ASUS EEE PC best, I was told that they were sold out. At least I was able to get fall shoes at Rasco's, so trip wasn't a total waste.

Then went to Target, which had also sold out of the EEE PCs. I could order online, but that's not the point. There's one more place I can try locally, but they won't be open till Tuesday. And, of course, now I'm wondering if this is a sign that I'm not meant to have one.

What about the Best Buy in Elmira?

I'm contemplating a run out to Elmira, but after yesterday's debacle where the Best Buy website said "In stock in Ithaca" and I arrived at the store to find it wasn't true, I'm not sure if I want to make the drive.

Call them on that funny thing that only has number buttons and does audio connections. If I recall my Muggle lore correctly, it's called a fellytone. If they claim to have one in stock, ask 'em to hold it for you.

There's also a Staples in Elmira, only about a half-mile from Best Buy. Make sense to call them both if you were going that far. Most of the time, BB is cheaper (last time I bought a monitor, it was $80 cheaper at BB for the identical monitor) but every once in a while, Staples surprises you.

Well, if it were me, probably it would mean that. But then I find the EEE keyboard way too small for anything.

This is the new slightly bigger ASUS, with a keyboard that is supposedly 92% of a full keyboard, though I wonder how they define "full keyboard". I tested it out yesterday and it should be adequate for short periods but not as a full time primary machine.

Enough so I can check and respond to email, surf the web, and write a few pages if I get inspired. And still significantly cheaper than an internet capable cell phone, given that I only use my cell phone about once a month.

And I now do! And thus the prospect of 9 days without internet is avoided.... (bicycle trips not conducive to lugging along full size laptops.)

Maybe their being sold out is a sign they're a good choice?

That's what I decided--the reviews were great and obviously back to school is peak demand time. Luckily I was able to find one an hour away so am now netbook enabled.
