Well it appears sigh of relief on the Amazon issue was a bit soon-- rankings for some authors have yet to be restored, the talented Nicola Griffith among them (thanks [livejournal.com profile] difrancis for letting me know.)

Sigh.

Also last night, as I was about to log off and head to bed, my PC was hit by a virus/worm/malevolent piece of software written by someone who better get the hell out of the gene pool before I find them and surgically remove all of their fingers. Norton warned me that it had spotted it and was taking action, but apparently not fast enough since it screwed up a bunch of files and it disabled Norton as Norton was trying to disable it. Managed to get the PC booted in safe mode and ran a scan using my emergency CD. Still need to reinstall Norton which will be a project for tonight.

Sigh again.

And later this morning I have a followup appt with my doctor-- "Hey, it's been two weeks since I dropped the crockpot liner on my hand and I know you guys said the xrays showed it wasn't broken but there are still places on that hand that I can't bear to touch and if you lightly touch a certain spot my fingers do this weird involuntary movement. Should I be concerned?"

Yeah, even without looking at the calendar I'm pretty sure I would have known this was a Monday.

ETA: Verdict is bruised nerve(s). Healing time 6-10 weeks, but good news is that there's no restrictions on activities- I can keep typing away, etc. Phew!

Your first problem is Norton. Between Vista and AVG, I've had no problems.

Old PC (desktop). Windows XP. Have Norton out of inertia, just kept installing latest version of their internet security package.

Le sigh.

Never commented here. Hope that's OK.

Less said about Norton the better. I've been recommending f-prot to the poor and the maimed (www.f-prot.com) because it's cheap-ish, not as intrusive as the big-name packages, and the company is on top of real threats very early.

Hey, glad to have you here. Feel free to chime in any time.

Yeah, I know Norton isn't that great but I've been too damn lazy to replace it. Chalk this up as a valuable life lesson, I suppose.

I hates Norton, my precious... was supposed to come with two free updates. Got the first one, but the following year, the update wouldn't load, and they told me I'd have to buy the new edition. Say whaaa...? Paid for it to be good for three years, dudes. McAfee takes over your email and brands all your friends as spam because they didn't change the subject line before responding to you. Yes it can be shut down but it's a pain.

f-prot, huh? I tried one smaller-production one that kept warning me that my server was attempting to connect to my computer (while I was signing in, in those dial-up days) but I don't think it was that.

Owies on the hand!

(And even yahoo didn't believe Amazon's claim that it was a "glitch.")
