Somebody up there likes me

It wasn't snowing here when I got up, so I decided to go in to the office today for a half day, mostly so I could meet up with a friend for lunch before we both took off for the holidays. By noon when we went to lunch it was snowing hard & fast, and by the time I was driving home it was already treacherous.

As I turned onto my street I saw the oncoming snowplow at the other end of the block, and through great good fortune managed to turn into my driveway moments before he came by and plowed me in.

Then, in the evening, as the snow took a break, I made myself a cup of tea and decided that as soon as I finished it I would go out and shovel. Before the tea was cool enough to drink my doorbell rang--

And there was a guy with a shovel trying to earn money for Christmas. No fool I, I said "Yes, please," and retired to the comfy chair to sip tea.

The only fly in the ointment is the cancelation of tonight's holiday party at the gym--I was going as jpsorrow's date :-) But hopefully we'll be able to get together later this weekend.

Aww - pretty sure that party would have yielded at least a couple of wonderful tales. :)

Better safe than sorry, however! The snow's hitting all up and down the east coast.

Judging by the news reports of all the accidents last night, it seems that staying in was the correct choice. There's nothing like the first serious snowstorm of the year to bring out the moron in all the drivers.

Someone shoveled my walk for me, too -- not looking to earn money, just couldn't handle watching me do it on crutches. I never see anyone looking for money for shoveling anymore.

It was still snowing here last I checked.

It's still snowing here. At 5:00 I went out to pick up SP from school (after-school childcare, that is -- school ends at 3:00) and couldn't find the sidewalk. The snow was deep enough, relative to my regrettably brief boots, that I seriously considered walking in the road instead. It's days like this I wish I were still little enough to wear snowpants ;^)

Well it turned out to be about 8 inches-- not a snowpocalypse, but enough to cause serious disruptions.

I actually own snowpants (for xc skiing).

Yeah, maybe about that here, too (hard to tell via eyeball, because the wind was strong enough to cause some pretty serious drifting, but the weather dudes are saying "15 to 20 centimetres" which is about the same thing). Today is beautiful and sunny (but cold); another storm is predicted for tomorrow.

I used to xc ski, when I lived in AB, but I don't think I ever wore snowpants. Long johns, sweatpants, cotton socks, woollen socks, and Gore-tex gaiters. I did get a pair of snowpants for the week of skiing at Sunshine that was my junior high school's Grade 8 trip, though, and I bet they would still fit me, if I could find them...

I have snow pants (actually windpants, but they are also water resistant). Because of my issues with vertical hold (aka attacks by snow snakes) my skiing style involves a fair amount of falling down, and it's best if I wear something that I can just brush snow off of, rather than fleece.

We got plenty of snow. It took a break for a while, long enough for the snow plows to come through, but it's snowing again.

Luckily for us since we live in a townhouse complex someone comes along and shovels the sidewalks and steps (lots of steps) for us.

I'm still hoping to be able to make the drive to Elmira to buy a computer desk. I'll see how much snow gets dumped on us the rest of the night.

When I first moved in, there were a couple of kids in the neighborhood who did it, but when they got old enough for real jobs the custom died out. Then last year a couple of guys with shovels started coming round--it tends to be guys in their twenties or thirties looking to make some quick extra cash.
