Thanks to all those who recommended their favorite mystery authors. My quest to buy one book for my sister as part of the Buy a Book, Save the World campaign wound up with me purchasing a half-dozen, and for this I blame you. And the always evil [livejournal.com profile] fireun who was at Waldenbooks when I stopped by and worked her wiles upon me.

My sister, who had learned of my cunning plan, called last night to say how excited she was at the prospect of having new authors to read.

And the thought for the day-- while Google alerts can be informative, there's nothing like opening up the daily digest with your morning coffee only to come across an obituary with your name on it. After close reading I'm fairly confident that I'm not the Patricia Bray mentioned, but it still sent a shiver down my spine.

Feel a bit like a character in a Monty Python skit-- "Not dead yet"

Yikes! Did you feel like Mark Twain?

And I'm sorry I missed the chance to recommend mystery authors ... I have not been the best LJ friends' pages reader of late...

Please feel free to chime in your suggestions-- Christmas is not far away, after all, not to mention Sheila has a January birthday, so I'll be looking for ideas.

Heh -- I go through the same thing with my Mom, who has a Jan. birthday ... no sooner have I figured out Christmas, then I must think of sometime new!

You received some excellent suggestions in http://pbray.livejournal.com/198272.html

I'd also add a couple other contemporary US authors: Jan Burke (Southern CA reporter sleuth) and Dana Stabenow (three different AK series, esp. the Kate Shugak ones).

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll keep my eye out for these. My sister is thrilled over having new authors to try.

Resistance is futile. &c.

RE: obit, how creepy. I've run across a number of long-dead versions of myself on the Internet over the years (my first name was a lot more popular 80 or 100 years ago than it is now, and my [married] last name is all over the damn place), but having one of them land directly in my inbox would be ... weird.

This is where a unique name like Barack Obama would come in handy....
