At Albacon I'll be doing a panel on bad Sci-Fi movies and why we love them. Each panelist gets to talk about two of their favorites.

My first choice will be Split Second with Rutger Hauer. It's awesome, with classic lines that include "We need bigger guns" and "You want me to put out an APB on Satan?" Not to mention demonstrating Patricia's first law of buddy movies known as the The Conservation of Sanity, which states that if one character appears to be operating on less than a full deck, any increase to his mental stability will be matched by an offsetting decrease in the mental stability of his partner.

My second choice required serious contemplation, but in the end Soldier with Kurt Russell gets the nod. Seldom has a lead actor been given so few lines to memorize, in fact each grunt he makes must be given weighty consideration since they far outweigh the actual words that he speaks. As a bonus the movie includes numerous goofs, including the final climatic fight scene where Kurt Russell is seen killing 24 of the new and improved Soldiers, even though there were only 17 at the start of the fight.

So which two movies would you choose?

I love Split Second. I think that's the film when any character has an emotional breakdown, they're knee deep in water. I think at one point Kim Catrall gets into the bathtub fully dressed with the water running to have her breakdown better.

I'm watching it again this weekend so will look for that scene.

I love it when he breaks into the rat-infested vending machine to get the undoubtedly stale chocolates.

The man's gotta have his chocolates. I could write an essay on the "decor" of his loft, too.

I will gleefully watch almost any dreck Rutger Hauer stars in. I found myself almost hypnotized by Blood of Heroes with him, Joan Chen and Vincent D'Onofrio (playing the strangest game since Quidditch) in a post-apocalypse setting.

I'll have to keep my eye out for that one.

Does Attack of the Killer Tomatoes count? Or are deliberate spoofs verboten? ;^)
