Farewell 2007, Hello 2008

Wishing everyone a happy and prosperous New Year!

Reflecting back on 2007, earlier this month I posted my annual writing summary.

Last year I promised myself that I would try to make more time for reading. I'd set a goal of a book a week, but even though I finished up one last book yesterday, I still fell far short. For each book that I managed to read from cover to cover, I have at least two more that I've never opened, or did open and tossed aside after the opening chapters failed to hold my interest.

Not to mention all the reference books that I skimmed but did not read in their entirety.

Looking at the list, I feel that there ought to be more titles on there, ones that I forgot to record. It's possible, but doubtful. I try to console myself with the remembrance that I also wrote 160K words this year, and took a college course in Criminal Investigations. Oh, and there's that pesky day job which cuts into my reading time as well.

What did you think of the Dexter books? We've had a couple of customers asking about them.

I really liked the first one. The second book was good, and the third one I didn't care for, in part because it was a bit too metaphysical for me (meditations on the nature of evil and whether it is a separate entity or inherent in all men) but mostly because of plot developments involving young children which happen to push one of my buttons.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tv show--it's interesting to note that season two of Dexter took the character in a very different direction than the books.

Looks like our only 2007 books in common were the Harry Potter and WebMage, which I got for Xmas and just finished. I don't keep very careful track, though ... since I read and commute, I go through a lot of books.

My daily commute is 1.5 miles. One traffic light :-)

I had been reading for fun while eating breakfast, but this fall that turned into reading the textbook during breakfast, which was fun, but much slower going than fiction.
