Struggling to come up with a decent title for the not-so-sekret project. Having failed at several other methods I'm now compiling a list of suitable verbs and nouns, then playing random mix & match. I'll probably wind up with a title like CHASING KIBBLE or DEATH BY SEMI-COLON.

Luckily I don't need a title at this stage of the game--it would be nice to have, but it's not an absolute requirement.

Reading: Finished DEXTER IN THE DARK by Jeff Lindsay, the third novel in his Dexter series. I enjoyed the book, but not as much as the first two, largely because of the continuing evolution of young Astor and Cody into budding serial killers. Interestingly enough, based on the first season of Dexter on Showtime, I get the sense that this is one of the areas where the television show and books will diverge. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the new season on Showtime which starts next Sunday.

I am sure if you give [livejournal.com profile] fireun enough time, we can come up a list of titles NOT to use for the book, based on some of the badly worded ones we see come in...

Not that it will be helpful, but it could provide you some amusement.

I'll bet you could :-)

FWIW, I really liked the title SOMETHING ODD but that's not going to fly since Bantam publishes Dean Koontz's Odd series....

well, maybe they would, since your books are going to be very different - and his are placed in fiction. I am guessing this one will not be?

Its worthing throwing in, along with one or two other recommendations, I guess. Something Strange doesnt have the same ring, though.

I will probably toss that one into the hat, along with a couple of others I came up with at lunch.

BUY THIS BOOK DAMMIT, has a ring to it, but may be a tad aggressive :-)

I don't know though, it might work. After all, Steal This Book was always a good selling title.

Maybe some reverse psych - Dont Buy this Book would attract a new audience.

After a week of madness including the computer dying, I too am trying to come up with a title for new not-so-sekret project. I mean "Not Quite Werewolves" will not work.

"Not Your Mama's Werewolves" is probably also a miss, then :-)

"I'm a little bit werewolf, he's a little bit rock & troll."

By the way, picked up the Forensic DNA book--it's exactly what I need. I'm sure I startled quite a few people in the mall when I flipped open the book to the chapter on Mitochondrial DNA analysis and begin chortling with glee....

You should do that while wearing a white lab coat.

Preferably while carrying a giant cotton swab and making eye contact with total strangers.

IF we're getting into giant cotton swabs, my brain is thinking, "A Sheep in Wolf's Clothing?"

I'll admit that was one of the things that didn't appeal to me in Dexter in the Dark, so I was waiting to see whether it would be played up in the new book, or if the author would move the story in a different direction.

I was also in a different headspace when I read the first two Dexter novels, which was fairly soon after I finished watching season one on Showtime, so I spent a fair amount of time pausing to reflect on the changes between the books and the televion show.

I thought it was an interesting choice, but will be curious to see how the majority of readers respond.

And I really really want Dexter to meet Blackburn someday!

There are certain things about the Dexter books that ping my authorial radar to say "This is a literary novel rather than a mystery or detective story." The story line with the kids is one of those things. Not to say that a literary style is a bad thing, but that obviously influences his readership.

What really surprised me when I was in Miami last winter was that his books weren't prominently featured in local bookstores. There's such a rich, vivid sense of place in his writing that I thought they'd be a natural fit.

Huh. That surprises me as well. I know the crew at Murder on the Beach are big supporters, but can't remember whether they were in the local section at Books & Books when I was last there... been a couple of years now.
