I volunteered to write a short article on character naming for STAR's newsletter. The first draft came in at 1,400 words, and it will probably run over 1,500 by the time I finish up with citations. Luckily for me the editor has a sense of humor.

In other news, the official score is Cat .75, Human .25. I've decided to give myself partial credit for administering a partial dose of liquid medicine to [livejournal.com profile] jennifer_dunne's cat. I gave up before I traumatized the cat, so perhaps the next dose will go better. Both cat and I are counting down the hours until her proper monkey returns. It's much easier to take care of the kitty when she's in good health--then I just turn on the TV, find a baseball game, and she'll condescend to sit in my lap and be petted for a few innings.

Unless, of course, it's the playoffs, in which case I get too excited for her tastes. On those days she prefers the Weather Channel or golf.

Liquid medicine is easier than pills. Truly.
I recommend kneeling so that you wedge the cat between your knees and crouching over her. That way when she tries to eel backward she doesn't have anywhere to go.
Then, put your off hand over kitty's head and press on her jaw hinges (not super hard) angling her head toward your dominant hand slightly.
When she opens her mouth put the eye dropper in just far enough to go over the hill of her tongue at the back of her mouth.
Squeeze the eye dropper quickly.
Kitty will gulp a lot, maybe cough a bit but the medicine will be INside the cat. ;-)

Don't be timid (they can sense weakness) and fast is good. Good luck next time! I'm grinning with you. Really.

Thanks for the encouragement! I just have to remember that I'm bigger (and presumably smarter) than she is.

We used to wrap the cat in a large bath towel, as I recall. Also, if giving a pill, it's helpful to sort of stroke downward (gently, of course!) from chin down to chest, while holding mouth shut, to ensure that pill is swallowed rather than concealed and surreptitiously spit out in the shrubbery half an hour later.

It's been a while for me, though: DH is allergic, so I've been petless for quite a while, and catless even longer.

Also: 1400 words sounds pretty short to me ... what was your word limit??

It's a 6 page newsletter, so 1400 words is a tad...excessive :-)

I did use a towel today, which the cat put up with. She knows the towel is for trimming her claws (I hold cat, Jennifer trims), so she was suspicious when she saw it.

Sadly I'm also allergic to cats, which is why I'm just visiting Jennifer's twice a day, rather than having the cat stay with me. I'm also allergic to dogs, but have hopes that one day if I start working from home I'll be able to get a Labradoodle or other similar breed that has a low allergy impact.

Ah. Well, in that case, yes... ;^)
