Just got back from hanging out with the Hard Lemonaders--(fellow writers and game nuts). Coincidentally [livejournal.com profile] jpsorrow had also just had the revision talk with his editor, so there was much discussion of changes we needed to make, how to make them, and general whining interspersed with periodic expressions of "But really, it's not that bad."

For my revision letter--as usual my editor nailed what was wrong with the book. In particular she called me on the scene that I was avoiding writing but that really needed to be in the book. I can't just allude to it--I have to actually write it. And it's going to be dark--beyond dark, really.

Plus I need more sex. Well, if not sex, romance. Which is also not a surprise--and here I'm not talking about a major shift in the story line, but rather one of emphasis. I agree it's something that needs to be done, I just need to figure out how to do it.

This inspired me to break into song, as I sang:

Doom, despair and agony on me.
Deep dark depression, excessive misery.
If it weren't for bad sex, I'd have no sex at all.
Doom, despair and agony on me.

Which I found extremely witty, but my companions had never seen Hee Haw, so instead of laughing they just stared blankly at me. This is what happens when you hang out with a younger crowd....

Anyway, feeling optimistic. The revisions are manageable, I know what I need to do this weekend, and from there it's step by step until the book is done.

Ok, I must be old. I recognized the song instantly-AND heard it in my head!

It's one of those songs that will be with us when we're in our 90s, long after we've forgotten everything else.

I got it from my dairy-farmer grandpa, who lived in Steuben County for years. (I'm probably related to half of Hornell.)

Is this the same editor who kept telling you to make the Devlin series darker, darker, darker?

Yup. She was right then, and she's right now.
