Where did summer go?
Sep. 2nd, 2011 05:47 amI can feel the seasons turning. This month it's cold and dark when I arise to start the early morning data loads. Not as cold as midwinter, naturally, but gone are the days when the predawn bird chorus would wake me before the alarm.
I no longer worry about making sure all the windows are open at night to cool the place off, instead I write a note reminding myself to schedule the annual cleaning for the furnace.
A few weeks ago I would try to get my bike rides in as soon as the sun was up. Now I find myself waiting a couple of hours for the fog to burn off, or for the temperature to climb up into the 60s.
There are still weeks of good weather left, naturally, and fall in the Northeast is a beautiful season. But there are also reminders everywhere you look that time is short, and winter will be here soon. Whether its the opening of the Cider Mill, or the first red leaves appearing on an impatient tree, there's a constant subtle chorus telling us to make the most of these days while we can.
