Wearing of the green
Mar. 17th, 2006 08:50 amHappy Saint Patrick's Day to one and all! I'll be out tonight for a pint or two of Guinness, but fully intend to return home well before the evening degenerates into amateur hour. Where I was raised, real Irishwomen (and men) go drinking on the other 364 days of the year, and know that tonight is the night for families and friends, and you leave the bars for the loons.
I remember the special hell of going out one Saint Patrick's Day only to discover too late that the bar had just installed an Irish karaoke system. Half of the folks who got up on the makeshift stage insisted on singing Danny Boy. In vain did the MC try to persuade them to pick a different song, no it was Danny Boy, over and over again. The only thing I can compare it to is the tryouts for American idol.
And don't forget to program your VCRs/Tivo boxes--the new Doctor Who series premieres tonight on the Sci-Fi channel.
