Writing: Waiting for agent's comments on the recently completed manuscript, so no actual writing this weekend. Did a few office chores-- went to Staples for inkjet cartridges and a case of paper, and then did some filing. Still can't find carpet under the debris field...

Reading: Finished C.E. Murphy's Urban Shaman this weekend. Highly recommend this book-- intriguing characters in a fast-paced adventure tale. Plus the author gets high marks for delivering an emotionally satisfying conclusion. Even though there is a sequel on the way, this book has an end rather than a mere stopping point. Too many otherwise great books are ruined by endings that feel as if the author simply sliced off the first part of a much larger novel, and offered it up as if it were a complete story.

Started reading Karin Lowachee's Cagebird this weekend. I really enjoyed her first book Warchild, but found the followup book Burndive to be less engaging. Still the first book was good enough that I'm giving her another chance.

Looking over my shelves, I note that while I don't have time to read the way I used to in my pre-writing days, I do read a significant number of first novels. Partly for the joy of discovering a new writer, and partly because I know how important word of mouth is for a first book, so I buy first novels and if I like them I make sure to spread the word.

Miscellaneous:In other news, the bike trip is coming up quickly. Was out cycling yesterday for about 90 minutes, taking advantage of the cool weather. Looked over the trip description for the tour, and I'm glad that we chose an easy tour this year. Longest day is only 82 miles, and the terrain is moderate. Last year we did a very challenging ride in Utah, but that was in October so there were months of training, not mere weeks.

Went to see new Batman movie this weekend-- enjoyed it, but it lacked the thrill of the first movie in 1989. Saw preview for Serenity which looks good, and the Fantastic Four movie which looks worth seeing in a theater.
