Tobias Bucknell has posted the results of his survey of SF/F genre advances, and you can see it here at http://www.tobiasbuckell.com/archives/001423.html

[livejournal.com profile] arcaedia has posted her thoughts on the survey which you can read here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/arcaedia/51516.html

Interesting to see that the numbers were pretty much what I had expected, based on my own experience and anecdotal evidence from other authors. One of the questions I frequently get asked at SF cons is "How much can I expect to make from my first book?" and it's nice to have a source to point them to.

Of course no mere survey is going to discourage those who are certain that their first book will sell for a figure that will enable them to quit their day job and live the lifestyle of the rich and famous. When faced with such massive self-delusion I've learned to wish them luck, and move on.

In other news started reading The Dark Glory War by Michael Stackpole. I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't pay attention to it when it was first released because the cover turned me off. You think as an author I'd know better....

Heading out tonight to a Mardi Gras party at favorite hangout. They promise beads, masks, live jazz and a voodoo room.

The new deal made Publishers Lunch.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Author of the Sword of Change trilogy Patricia Bray's THE FIRST BETRAYAL and two sequels, in which a scholar faces and defeats an assassin and is swept into international intrigue and discovers his soul is, perhaps literally, not his own, to Anne Groell at Bantam Spectra, in a nice deal, by Jennifer Jackson at Donald Maass Literary Agency.

I looked at this and thought "Cool! I'd like to read this story."

Of course first I have to finish writing it...
