So, if it's 1:30 in the morning and something bangs into the window screen hard enough to rattle it, should I assume that it was a bat? I'm not really up on my suburban backyard wildlife beyond the obvious (Squirrels, yes. Chipmunks, yes. Rabbits, yes. Skunks, raccoons and feral cats, occasionally).

Bats I haven't seen before, but I'm running out of other suspects.

Its either that or a cat that can jump very, very high.

Bats have been out like crazy lately though - its quite fun when we firespin and they just go into a frenzy through our backyard.

We had a cat who used to climb the window screens and rattle them to be let in.

Can't recall if any of the coons ever did it, but I bet they could if they were trying to climb up to the roof. Same with squirrels.

Bird? And I definitely wouldn't rule out bats, either.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I figured. I was trying to convince myself it was a really big moth but it would have to be a Sci-Fi channel special to make that much noise.

I was trying to think of any nocturnal birds that might be around, and wouldn't be calling out. The only one that comes to mind is owls, and I'm fairly confident we don't have owls in the neighborhood.

Was kind of hoping it was a nocturnal squirrel but I think a bat is more likely.

I'd think cat before bat.
The cat could have been after a bug. "You moved!" *whap whap* "Come here my delectable little winged and leggy morsel..." *crunch crunch crunch*
:-)

Or a June bug? They're big and whap into windows a lot.

Hmm. It would have to be a huge on, but that's a comforting thought.

They used to scare me silly when I was a kid.

Birds, perhaps? The birds here have a regular 3 a.m. chorus line. I don't see why yours can't get plastered on pyracantha berries and fly into a screen at 1:30.

Hmm, that's possible. Usually the bird chorus starts around 5AM, led by the crows (voted by my recent house guest as creatures most likely to inspire the purchase of a shotgun). But it's possible it was an early/late bird.

Good news is that there's been no repeats since that night, so I'm resting easier.
