Things that make me happy-- binder clips. I don't know why, but a fresh package of binder clips from Staples is enough to make me happy. This time it was a package of the traditional small black ones, and feeling greatly daring I also tossed in a box of the multi-colored large clips. Having no cats, I can only blame the Friday night writers gang and our recent productivity for the increased demand for binder clips.

Things that make me happy part two-- a new laptop for the dayjob, replacing my slowly dying relic.

Things that make me less happy-- realizing that while yes, the wireless card in the new laptop connects just fine to my home network, it won't stay connected for more than a 5 minute stretch. Not what I needed to find out at 6AM when I had a scheduled data load to complete by 8AM. Sigh. I've got to crawl through all the software and settings to figure out what's going on.

Things that make me less happy part two-- realizing that the toilet is leaking. Since the house only has one bathroom, this means calling a plumber, and working from home--with the problematic wireless--for at least part of the day.

But hey, at least I have those binder clips to keep me company.

Bet you a beer it's the energy settings that are zapping your connection.

Good thought, that's something it hadn't occured to me to check out.

You are wise, grasshopper. Changing the power management and roaming aggressiveness settings for the adapter produced remarkable improvement.

Not wise, just experienced. That happened to me on my current work laptop when I received it almost two years ago. It drove me nuts until I found that the energy efficiency settings kept zapping my work.

I was having the same issue with the work laptop not staying connected via the home wireless. A complete power-down of laptop, router, and cable modem, followed by a sequential power-up--modem, router, laptop--worked for a while. Ultimately, the router needed to be reset--it's possible that the issue with my work laptop was the first hint.

At first, we thought it was an issue with the laptop, which was a particular model that other folks at the day job had the same issue with. It's apparently touchy.

It's probably several things, as is often the case. Not only does the new laptop have a different kind of wireless card, they also changed the software used to connect to the VPN, which is where some of my coworkers have pointed the finger. Sigh.

They make you happy simply because you are a writer, I think. I am made implausibly happy by similar small such things. :)

Really a trip to the office supply store, a supply of chocolate, and I'm set to write.

Binder clips are a great goodness, though my real weakness (other than notebooks and pens) is post-its. So many sizes and colours and uses, so shiny. Can't get enough of them.
We are stationery geeks and proud.

Color-coded post-its are mandatory! Especially when it's time for copyedits and galleys.

Also using colored folders makes their contents smarter and more creative.

Mmm. Stationery. We become writers so we can write this off on our taxes.

Thanks! I'm going to celebrate by taking the afternoon off and refusing to think about the day job :-)

I always refuse to work on my birthday as a matter of honor. (This year since it is on a saturday, I am taking Friday off. Just because)
