From USA Today's website. I think this says it all:

There were reports of New Orleans homes being flooded to the ceiling. "I'm not doing too good right now," Chris Robinson said via cell phone from his home east of the city's downtown. "The water's rising pretty fast. I got a hammer and an ax and a crowbar, but I'm holding off on breaking through the roof until the last minute. Tell someone to come get me please. I want to live."

Once, in the early '90s, I considered a move to New Orleans, a city I know well and love dearly. Right now I am exceptionally glad I didn't follow through on that impulse.

Sigh

I would assume not.

There are also reports of people in hard hit areas who had decided to wait out the storm, then changed their minds and called 911. Unfortunately rescue services can't get out to them until the winds slow down enough to make it safe for their vehicles to be on the road, and then, of course, they'll have to make their way around flooding and storm debris.

A quote that's often being repeated on the news coverage this morning is Jefferson Parish President's Aaron Broussard's comment "I'm expecting that some people who are die-hards will die hard."
