Well the earlier entry was interrupted by my computer frantically proclaiming that it had been infected by the latest variation of the w32.zotob.e virus, and that I needed to do something about this *right now*.

In a weird way the message made me feel better, since I was convinced yesterday that the computer was infected. Performance slowed to a crawl and the firewall detected unusual activity. I even had a very good guess as to which e-mail had infected me. So I ran the virus scanner, but even though the virus definitions had been updated on 8/14, the virus program insisted that my system was clean.

This morning when an updated set of virus definitions was available, the virus program automatically downloaded them and then began shrieking that my system was infected. Following procedure I had to report this to the virus team who gave me software patches to install, and then I had to reboot in Safe Mode, and run a full system scan to clean things up. Probably lost a good two hours to this thing, plus all the time this morning when my system was so slow it was practically unusable.

Grr. Argh. If I could find the guy who wrote this, I would beat him with my keyboard and sentence him to a lifetime of communicating by carrier pigeon.

Reading: Enjoying Cast in Shadow by Michelle Sagara. One thing I like is how she's handled magic is this story. It's richly textured, and not just a tacked-on after thought.

Last night I bought Raven's Strike by Patricia Briggs which is going on the top of my TBR stack. Because of our similar names Patricia Briggs and I sometimes get each other's fan mail, and I've heard from more than one reader who bought one of my books because they had confused me with her. Luckily she's an extremely talented writer who also writes character-driven fantasy stories, so I haven't heard any complaints yet.
