Just do it

A scorchingly hot day here today. Got up early today and got out on my bike early to try and beat the heat. I managed to get my miles in and get back to the house by 10:30, but was still drenched in sweat. From their fragrance the bike clothes were clearly a biohazard, and were handled accordingly.

As I was cycling it occurred to me how much cycling and writing have in common. The key element to both is to put your butt in the seat and just do it.

I'm not the kind of person who writes every day, though I admire those who do. Similarly I'm not the kind of person who exercises every day, although those folk also have my admiration. I'm a goal oriented person, so the motivation to write comes from having deadlines, and the motivation to train comes from knowing that in a very short time I will be spending all day on the bike, for days in a row. When the time comes I can't say that I don't feel like it, or that it's too hot or too cold, or the bike isn't quite right, or that my butt is not on speaking terms with me after that last patch of cobblestones. I've got to go out there and do it, and know that in the end I'll be glad that I did.
