Went shopping today for something that apparently doesn't exist. I knew exactly what kind of CD player I wanted for my writing room, but it rapidly became clear to me that the market has changed in the 10+ years since I last purchased a stereo system.

What I wanted was a simple bookcase system. Small footprint, no giant speakers. I can get that in a one CD system, or I can get 3 or 5 CD player systems with giant speakers, but what I'm looking for isn't out there. Checked out Target, Circuit City and the audio store where I'd purchased my current system. I suspect more research is needed.

Did make it to the library and picked up a decent costume reference book, and checked out the DK Eyewitness to History books from the children's section of the library. Went looking to see if my paperbacks were on the shelves but apparently they've been checked out. Hmm.

Writing: 1,252 words today. A short scene, but I like how it ended. I'd hoped to write more, but writing schedule was interrupted by stomach bug. And there are very few scenes that can be improved by writing while dealing with flu-like symptoms.

Just so you know, the ipod shuffle is one sale at Target and/or Circuit City. So if that was one of your inclinations . . . perhaps check it out?

It's on sale for about $100.

The ipod shuffle looks cute, but it only lets you play songs in random access order, and that's not always the mood I'm in. The new ipod mini models are creeping down towards the right price point.

Although the 1000 song library is a bit daunting. That's around 60 CDs which would be a substantial portion of my CD collection. Which, I suppose is the point.

But what I read in the ad said that the shuffle was only an option, that you could also still play programmed orders as well. Perhaps the ad was . . . misleading. I'll have to research this more.

According to the news coverage, when you first load in an entire CD it will play the CD in order. After that, it's a random shuffle. You can dial the shuffle if you don't like the current song, but there's no index or guide that will let you decide to play the 3 Doors Down CD if that's what you're in the mood for.

Well that sucks. You'd think it would be easy to create one that was programmable AND could shuffle. But I suppose it's the sacrifice you make for having a teeny-tiny player.
