Hydrofloric Acid.

Just make sure that you a) are legally allowed to obtain some, b) have a ventilation hood to work with, and c) work on your maniacal laugh.

If you have dragon fire available, use it. Otherwise go with the really really big hammer. That *feels* better than a common hammer.

Kidding aside, what you want is a bootable CD (or DVD) that will then erase the hard drive, Darik's Boot and Nuke is a good free choice (http://www.dban.org/)

If you're really paranoid you should be able to locate a commercial disk shredder that will actually grind the disk up (I've worked for companies that go this far!) but if you're looking to donate it, a DoD level wipe from DBAN should keep you safe.

Good luck!

Just voted for a really big hammer. I think dragon fire would be better, but it can be hard to come by. I'd say, use what is more readily available.

Lacking a Mr. Fusion or volcano to drop it into, I vote dragon fire.

I've heard that you should drill a hole in them before disposal.

A nail gun, that's what they use at the local PC recycling place. It shoots a nail through all the disks that make up a hard drive and makes them unusable.

And after the ring was destroyed, Frodo and Sam set up a nice electronics disposal business on the slopes of Mount Doom....

Hey, that's a cool idea. Wonder if I could get the guys at Home Depot to demo a nail gun. Repeatedly.
