Round up

This morning at physical therapy they let me bike for 7 whole minutes, 2 more minutes than I was allowed on Thursday. I have to keep reminding myself that this is progress, and that as frustrated as I am with the slow recovery, it could have been much worse.

I'm still under house arrest, with orders to limit walking and standing, but I did stage a short jailbreak yesterday so I could go see a movie with Josh--I was the woman who brought a pillow so she could prop up her foot on the seat in front of her.

This year's bike trip was supposed to be Santa Fe/Taos in mid-September, but last week the tour company canceled the trip due to low enrollment. Which was actually a relief, because I'd become increasingly worried about whether or not I'd be able to cope with such a challenging trip. After reviewing the options, we decided to still go that same week, but now our destination is the Outer Banks of North Carolina (easy! flat!) So all in all it's working out for the best. I get to go to one of my favorite spots and the cycling should be within my limits.*

*When pressed, my doctor agreed that my being sufficiently recovered in time for the trip is not an entirely unreasonable expectation. I took that as a Yes.

That's definitely a yes.

Like my sports med doctor: hmm, could paddling be contributing to this pain? Me: No! Him: right.

Just read this post, then backed up a bit to see what happened. Yikes! Sounds terrible. Susan and I send you happy, shiny thoughts to make you feel better.

If it happens again, call Doctor Sam. I know everything about ankle sprains, especially what not to do.

:-) This doctor also has a background in sports medicine. And he's more encouraging than the physical therapist, but then again he's known me for 20 years while she's just met me.

Me: "I'm not athletic. But I stay in decent enough shape that I can do a half-day hike, or bike for at least fifty miles, so that's what I'd like to get back to."

PT: *blinks* "Well, that's certainly a goal."

Yeah, I was the textbook of what not to do during the early days after the sprain. Once I had been checked out and was assured it wasn't broken, I assumed that a couple days rest would take care of everything.

By day three I figured out that the walk-in clinic's advice to just take it easy wasn't cutting it, and thus sought appropriate medical treatment. But it's been a long, slow road since then.

Well when asked the doctor wouldn't commit until I offered him the appropriate phrasing, at which point he agreed.

If he really thought I wouldn't be able to do it, he would have told me flat out. Fortunately he's known me for twenty years, so has a good sense of both my personality and endurance.

It's basically the same injury as an ACL when you tear it. I used to do it in track, then run again a week later. Which is why I had an operation 25 years later.
