Last night the usual suspects came over for game night. There's nothing like a group of writers to enliven playing "Apples to Apples." We quickly learned that you needed both eloquence and knowledge of the judge's personal biases.

Flipper was the obvious winner for the "Squeaky Clean" prompt, although in other cases the winner was the least obvious choice rather than the most. I was proudest of my win for "Cowardly" for which I submitted Chicken Pox. As I explained, "You can have your smallpox and your cowpox, but out of all the poxes, the Chicken Pox is the coward of the lot."

Alas the rest of this writer's life is less glamorous. There were galleys to look at, I fiddled with marketing materials wondering why it's easier to write an entire scene than it is to sum up a book in a mere 150 words, and made periodic trips down to the basement to check to see how much water had seeped in. And the score as of this evening is: Galleys: in progress, to be finished Sunday. Marketing materials: suck and will attempt again. Basement: maximum water was small puddles, now gone.

And now it's time to get ready for Torchwood. Going to rewatch last week's episode (guest starring Spike!), and then watch the new one.

ETA: Minor episode spoilers for Torchwood S2Ep2 and Doctor Who in comments.

How do you like that show? I would need to pay an additional $16/month to get that station added to my cable package.

*ick* about the basement. Glad it stayed pretty dry overall.

I also would have to pay extra to get BBC America.

But for Spike....

I like Torchwood. It doesn't take itself seriously at all, and in fact seems to revel in sci-fi cliches. And the cast is very, very pretty.

$16 a month would be a bit pricey, but I'll admit that I've become fond of other BBC America shows, including Top Gear (to call it a car show is to miss the point entirely).

Well he was just a guest on one episode so far, but he was fine. And fangirls all over the internet swooned when he repeatedly locked lips with Captain Jack Harkness, who turns out to have been his ex-lover.

That's Cap'n Jack for you.
Though I would've thought once you'd gone Gallifrey, you never...
hmmm. How to make that work?

And I should mention that part of what I enjoy about Torchwood is their view of the world. Out of the five main characters, four are canonically bisexual (or omnisexual in Jack's case), and their preference in sexual partners isn't even worth a mention. Of the committed couples we've seen, a significant percentage were interracial, including the guest characters for tonight's episode Sleeper, and again that's simply something in the background.

Gender, sexual preference, color, the message is that none of that matters when faced with the real threats that are out there.

I think Jack's the poster boy for "love the one you're with."

Which is a pretty sensible attitude to take, considering his probable future (as revealed in Doctor Who.)

Oh, no.. I know the piece of information to which you refer. I was just trying to avoid spoiling it for others.

If you want to comment on Cap'n Jack, comment away.

(Though I'm having a strange urge to take a sound byte of Pirates of the Caribbean -- the first, perfect movie -- and run it over a Doctor Who clip.)
yes, "You are, without doubt, the worst pirate I've ever heard of."
"But..."

Jack & Jack would be hilarious together. Just saying.

Oh and I put a spoiler alert on the post so others will know to avoid.

Yes.. It must be done. If I had the software to do it.

Then, of course, one would have to find some way to work, "Who looks at a screwdriver and says, 'This could really be more sonic?'" into a PotC clip.

spoiler....

I do wonder, though. Was Beau in Louisiana, or our Cold New York Home?

Apples to apples is so. much. fun. Best played with a beer in one hand an an friendly arguement in the other.

Exactly!

Of course beer doesn't go quite as well with strategy games--just ask any of my friends about my skills at LotR's version of RISK.

Had you raided my house you would have discovered the galley proofs for THE FINAL SACRIFICE. Alas they are being mailed back to Bantam tomorrow, so you'll have to wait until June 24th :-)

Avaunt thee, Evil Woman!

Not only have you denied me... (Hey, I got as far as Elmira!) but I also saw Season One of Torchwood for sale and sorely was I tempted.
