Brought to you by the letters W, T and F

The creators of the 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie have apparently decided to relaunch the franchise with a new Buffy movie. Without the involvement of Joss Whedon or any of the cast from the TV series.

Um. In the department of 'bad ideas I have heard today', that rates really quite highly.

What are they thinking?

[identity profile] pbray.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That pretty much sums up the reaction of almost everyone.

I have to assume they think they're going to pull in everybody who knows the name Buffy the Vampire Slayer as an abstract concept but don't know anything about the show, its creators, or actors. I suspect there are a lot of them. But certainly every indication is that the actual *fans* would be staying away in droves....

And also every reason to believe fans of the show--who are highly organized and lavish in their devotion to Whedon and the TV series--will take umbrage and do their best to make everyone aware that this new movie is a very bad thing.

It's a guess that they are sick and tired of hearing about how they ruined Whedon's original premise, and are going to prove they can Do It Without Him.

Ego is a wonderful thing.

Not to mention "Hey, anything with a vampire is big bucks and we've got the rights to this, so..."

I think you have a BINGO!

I saw that. I think they're basically figuring that, with Whedon's massive failure to attract a popular audience, really they ought to give the range to a tyro who connects with both genre and youth audiences. That's the rumor I heard from the board's meeting, anyway.

Will be interesting to see what happens.

[identity profile] scbutler.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
3 to 2 it never happens.

[identity profile] pbray.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't bet against it. After all, they're making a sequel to WANTED (last summer's movie that featured a bullets that turned corners).

Yeah, but the outcry is going to be deafening.

This is henceforth to be referred to as BuffyFAIL.

Well, I can put that one on my Movies I Needn't Worry About Bothering To See list, then ... :^P
