Advance planning is helpful in these cases--you can get in shape for anything with a 6 month lead time. And a lot of it is mental--I've seen strong bikers psych themselves out of hill climbing, while those of us with more mediocre abilities manage to get up and over by repeating the refrain "There's beer on the other side."
