And the answer is

Crater Lake, Oregon.

The question was "Where are Patricia and Stacey biking this year?"

Less than 200 days to get in shape :-)

OOOOOOH!

And check out Diamond Lake State Park near Crater Lake, too. AWESOME biking there.

Uh, let me rephrase. For those of us who don't mind smaller hills and long flat runs. Hee.

Thanks for the recommendation! It looks like we'll be making it out to Diamond Lake later that week.

Yeah, we're looking forward to it. In the end it was a tossup between the San Juans mountains of Colorado (Mesa Verde, Telluride, etc), or Crater Lake, and we wound up picking Crater Lake. Maybe Colorado will be next year.

We're looking at returning to the San Juans for a backpacking trip this year, though the current front-runner is a return to Capital Reef.

Ooh, both sound good.

As I said last year, and will undoubtedly say next year, better you than me, babe. Although in 200 days even I might be able to get in shape...

Advance planning is helpful in these cases--you can get in shape for anything with a 6 month lead time. And a lot of it is mental--I've seen strong bikers psych themselves out of hill climbing, while those of us with more mediocre abilities manage to get up and over by repeating the refrain "There's beer on the other side."

soooo envious!

Have you been able to get out at all in Ireland? Or is the traffic too much of an issue?

[identity profile] pbray.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
And by get out, of course, I meant biking. I can see from your LJ that you actually do leave the house....

*laugh* I knew what you meant :)

The problem is twofold. One problem is the traffic, which is utterly terrifying. The other problem is that the bike I brought with me is a recumbent, which is fantastic for my back but not as maneuverable in general as a standard bike, and specifically a real pain in the ass on hills. The town in which we are living is, unfortunately, rather like a miniature San Francisco. So no, I haven't gotten out at all. :P

I did bike once in Ireland, when I was 19. If I'd remembered what the roads were like, I wouldn't have brought a bike at all. But now I feel sort of stuck with the recumbent, and donno quite what to do about it all.

I went biking in Kerry back in 1996--as I recall I spent much of the week looking over the wrong shoulder when I heard traffic behind me, which was disconcerting to say the least.

I ride a hybrid which isn't great for my back, but I'd be too nervous in a recumbent unless I was only sticking to bike paths.
