Interesting story from BBC Science on a study that reveals psychopaths can switch empathy on and off. The prevailing theory was that they entirely lacked empathy, but this study suggests something more complex is going on.

Which makes sense to me. When I was studying criminology I kept running across phrases such as "not a true psychopath" or "not a psychopath in the classic sense, since he seemed to empathize with X..." as it became clear that real life criminals didn't generally fit into the neatly labeled boxes that had been drawn up.
