Well it's about time
Jul. 28th, 2008 09:09 amYesterday I finally broke down and bought furniture. I've needed a new mattress for a while now, but last summer when I shopped I hit brain overload and never bought anything. This time, after a month of deliberating, I finally steeled myself to the task and picked out a new mattress set. To reward myself I also purchased a recliner, something I've wanted/needed for several years now. My current living room setup requires me to twist sideways on the sofa to read or watch TV, something that is not particularly back friendly.
The purchases totaled less than I spend on vacations each year*, but it feels like an enormous sum of money to me. The frugal Yankee inside keeps insisting that the mattress isn't that bad, even if it's old enough to vote, and really if I just sit up straight, the couch works okay. Luckily I beat that voice into submission, and handed over my credit card to the nice saleswoman. Then to celebrate I went out to buy new sheets (because mattresses are now deeper, who knew?) and treated myself to a nice dinner.
*It's also less than my annual book purchases, but books have always been necessities while everything else (including, sometimes food) was deemed a luxury.
