Between last weekend's flying visit to Toronto and long hours at the day job, I haven't had much time for livejournal, or indeed, for almost anything else. There's nothing quite like scrambling to pick up support for databases from someone who is about to retire, especially when they're idosyncratic databases full of design quirks with zero documentation, that nonetheless are used by a large high-profile customer set who won't be forgiving of errors.
Having to polish up some very rusty skill sets including MVS JCL, something I last worked with in the era when Mosaic was a hot new program, and you did your internet searches using Gophers. If you know what JCL is, well, you probably remember punch cards and white & green bar computer paper, and next time you see me we can play "Remember this?"
Since I'm already crunched for free time, it makes perfect sense that I've just signed up for another class this semester. Sadly no Criminal Justice courses fit my schedule, but there's a Spanish for Travelers class being offered on Thursday nights. I've previously signed up twice to take Spanish through BCC Community Education, and both times the class was canceled due to low enrollment. This class is being offered through the BU Continuing Education Center, so keeping my fingers crossed that third time is the charm.
I studied Spanish from 5th grade through 11th grade, which means I'm able to order a round of beers and request to be taken to the nearest American embassy. Also had four years of high school French, and minored in German in college, with similar levels of retention. I can puzzle my way through signs in airports, and pick out key words in conversation, but by the time I figure out what the speaker just said, they've already moved on to a new topic. Hopefully this new class will help me improve my proficiency, and I've convinced a friend to sign up with me as well, so we can practice on each other.
