A Lexicon of Writers
Sep. 15th, 2007 07:49 pmIt's a murder of crows and a parliament of owls, so it seems we ought to have our own collective noun for writers. A lexicon of writers, or perhaps a smack of writers, a la jellyfish?
Whatever we call it, today was STAR's semi-annual writing retreat, so I dutifully rose early and joined my fellow writers at a local B&B. After gathering for coffee, we staked out various corners of the B&B to begin our day. I picked a table in one of the parlors, powered up the laptop and turned on my iPod. I wrote for about two and a half hours, broke for a leisurely lunch and time to catch up with everyone, then I wrote for another hour and a half. All told I managed just over 2K words--not the most productive day I've ever had, but I finally managed to force myself to finish the scene that had been giving me problems. If I'd been home on my own today, I might have reorganized the writing room rather than sitting down to tackle it.
A nice break from routine and a chance to catch up with the other members of STAR. Couldn't help but think how nice it would be if I could live this way--with an attentive hostess serving lovely meals and making sure there was always freshly brewed tea, so all I had to worry about was writing.
