Party like it's 198x
Apr. 29th, 2006 09:34 amLast night I did something I haven't done since the 1980's, and made shepherd's pie for a dinner with friends. A staple of my college years, it's still one of my favorite meals. Since I don't cook (note it is don't not can't), it's rare that I get a chance to enjoy it, and finally I gave in and decided to make it myself.
Of course there were a few changes to the recipe since I'd last made it. In college we bought the cheapest cut of ground beef possible, and generic brand frozen vegetables, usually corn which I remember as being cheap. Last night's dinner was made with ground bison, an assortment of brightly colored vegetables, and the mashed potatoes were made with rice milk in deference to the no-dairy crowd. Still it was good. Very good. Went well with beer, and I think that sums it up nicely.
Afterwards I stunned myself and the other players by winning 2 out of 3 games of the new Marklin edition of Ticket to Ride. One game was solidly mine, but the second game I won only because

ETA: Finished NIGHTINGALE'S LAMENT by Simon Green. Another short book bites the dust. This book was even shorter than it looked--the last 20 pages were a preview for Charlaine Harris's DEAD TO THE WORLD. I know I wouldn't be happy to see someone else's work previewed in my book, so I'm glad that my contract specifies that the only preview material that can be in there is a preview for one of my titles.
