We will rock you
Sep. 11th, 2005 09:22 amOur conference wrapped up at 5:30 last night. Went out for dinner with a few of the folks who were staying overnight in Ithaca, then made the hourlong drive back home. No celebratory glasses of wine since I had the drive ahead of me, but once I was home I did break out the chocolate before crashing.
Overall the conference went extremely well. As the Chief Minister in Charge of Worrying (Planning, Logistics, Scheduling), I had several minor bumps in the road to deal with, but everything worked out okay in the end.
The speakers were great, in particular our keynotes MaryJanice Davidson and Sherrilyn Kenyon both gave outstanding talks. The hotel couldn't have been more accomodating-- everything was done on time, as we had specified, and our requests for last minute changes were met with smiles and a can-do attitude.
jennifer_dunne and I tag-teamed to fill in for the missing speaker on "4 Most Common Mistakes Found in Manuscripts and How to Fix Them". Our brainstormed list had 10 mistakes, which we grouped into 4 categories just to prove that we could match the program description. The talk went extremely well, perhaps helped along by the fact that by 2PM yesterday afternoon we were both wired on caffeine.
And the food was good-- we had chocolate available at every meal. Chocolate at the dessert reception Friday night, chocolate chip muffins at breakfast, a brownie sundae for dessert at lunch, and more decadently chocolate brownies for the afternoon breaks.
The bookfair ran into a few problems-- despite the fact that the home office had confirmed the book order, the actual shipments to the store didn't have all the titles we needed.
jpsorrow went above and beyond the call of duty, visiting two other bookstores to buy copies of missing books to fill in the gaps. In the end almost everyone had books to sign, and for those authors that didn't, the bookstore sent $5 coupons for them to hand out in apology.
My dictatorial side came out when I was time-keeping the editor/agent appointments. I was polite but firm, and kept everyone on schedule to ensure that each person had their 10 minutes, and kept everything moving so we stayed on schedule.
jennifer_dunne did a great job as the overall conference chair, and the folks in the STAR chapter were wonderful. No one could believe that we had hosted such a major event with such a tiny chapter. Everyone I spoke with, from our distinguished guests to first-time conference attendees told me that they'd had a wonderful time.
There were lots of neat folks at the conference, and my one regret is that I didn't have a chance to spend as much time talking to them as I wanted because I was tied up with organizational duties.
And now it's over, phew! It was a success, and I'm done. Only thing left is to finish up the receipts and then off to rest on my laurels and let someone else volunteer for next year.
