Last night I found the opening scene I had written for a fantasy novel. The scene itself was fairly rough, but I recognized my turn of phrase and my handwriting in the scribbled comments. However I don't remember writing this story at all. Judging by the printout this is at least twelve years old, and probably closer to fifteen.
I must have written this. Even from just the opening scene, I can see where this story was heading, and guess the major plot twists (or minor ones actually, since it's not that great a story). But I don't remember it.
In the same folder I also found a partial scene from a space opera, which I do remember kicking around a bit, also circa 1990.
Neither of these fragments inspired me to revisit them. With the benefit of time I can see that they were both highly derivative, and there was nothing special there to grab the reader. Still I filed them back away so I can pull them out again in another dozen years and remind myself how much I've grown as a writer.
