Back home after spending the long weekend in Charlotte visiting friends from college. Had a great time with them-- there's just something about spending time with friends that have known you for two dozen years. We all agreed that we hadn't changed a bit in the intervening years :-)
Went to see the new Hitchhiker's movie. My expectations were low, as were my friends, so the movie was okay. Mostly we went because it seemed our destiny to watch this together. We'd listened to the original radio show together, and were jointly appalled by the cheesy TV production when that aired.
Adding to the surreality of the experience was Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin the Paranoid Android. He was perfect for that role, but the night before we'd watched Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets with my godson, so I kept thinking Snape = Marvin and giggling.
Joseph-Beth Booksellers opened a new store in Charlotte and was kind enough to schedule their grand opening to coincide with my visit. I'm all in favor of a bookstore that includes a wine bar, and wished I could relocate the store to my neck of the woods. I picked up two novels (one SF, one mystery), and a British Museum book on The Phoenicians. Totally failed to get any fiction reading done during my trip, but I did read most of the Phoenicians book during the plane flight and long layover in Philadelphia.
Well now it's back to the salt mines, and the few weeks left till the new book must be finished. I expect to enter cave troll mode shortly, when I'll start ignoring anything that isn't directly related to finishing the book.
