River in the rain
Apr. 3rd, 2005 07:36 pmWent out to lunch today and had interesting adventure trying to get back home. Headed along the usual road, but wasn't surprised to see the barricades up, since it tends to flood in heavy rains. Followed detour signs to Main Street, which is the alternate route. Half mile down Main Street, and the police were there with flashing lights and signs that said "Road Closed". Hmm. This is not good. There are two major roads that lead west, and now both of them are closed. Followed the detour directions to go east on Main Street, planning to get on the highway. Only right before the highway, there are firetrucks and concrete barricades being erected to try to contain the water rushing across the road. So not a good sign. So far I'd followed three posted detours, only to have each detour lead me to another closed road.
I managed to snake my way back to where I'd started, and then get on the highway. Since it's elevated, we had a pretty good view of the flooding, which is as bad as I've seen it since I've lived here. As we crossed over the river, we noted the water level was only 2-3 feet below the bridge deck. And the water was not only brown and fast moving, there was more than just water in the river. "It's never a good thing when you see people's stuff floating by," I observed, in my role as Mistress of the Obvious.
Good news is that so far the basement is mostly dry, with only a small puddle despite the standing water in the back yard. Rivers are supposed to crest early tonight, and then to add that special touch we're expecting 1-2 inches of snow overnight.
Writing: 1,207 words today. A short scene. Need to sit down and sketch out the order of the next few scenes.
