You ever have one of those home improvement projects that starts out small and then grows into a scope and complexity that would frighten the producers of Extreme Makeover Home Edition?

The kind of thing that starts with "I need to fix this leaky toilet" then wanders by "As long as I'm working on the bathroom I ought to do something about the sink" and then next thing you know the bathroom is ripped apart and you're selecting tile and discussing fixtures.

Computers are a lot like that.

I'm still a dial-up user. In my area cable-modem service is expensive and has a poor reputation for reliability. But DSL just became available here a couple of months ago, and I'm thinking it's time I made the switch.

But, of course, my laptop computer is showing distressing signs of aging, and it's too underpowered to upgrade from Windows 98. So before I invest in DSL, I should first look at getting a new computer.

Then of course there's my printer. I purchased it in 1997, when my first book was published. It still works, but the slow speed and 100 sheet paper tray make printing a manuscript an exercise in patience.

And now the simple question of DSL versus cable modem has morphed into a much more complicated issue of buying a new laptop versus a desktop, and do I really *need* a new printer or should I keep using the old one until it dies?

Hmm. Maybe dial-up isn't so bad after all.
