End of the season
Oct. 21st, 2006 09:20 amLooks like it's going to be a nice day here, but a glance out the window confirmed that it's time to put away the bike. It would be a good day for a ride, but it's just not safe to be on the roads.
Our town follows the quaint custom where homeowners rake their leaves into the streets to await pickup by the giant leaf-sucking machines. Already narrow roads become even narrower, and drivers aren't good about sharing the road with bicyclists who must swerve around leaf piles.
In most years they manage to get the leaves picked up before the first lasting snowfall (but not always). But by then there will be sand on the streets which is another hazard. Thus even though I have the necessary cold weather gear, I've found it wisest to leave the bike at home.
Which means it's time to find some other form of exercise. Even in the winter, I'll walk five days a week, but I need something more. I enjoy cross-country skiing, but that's been hit or miss around here for the last few winters, so looks like it's time to check out the local gyms. I dislike going to the gym, but I dislike exercising on my own at home even more.

Date: 2006-10-21 01:55 pm (UTC)I am sorry your biking season is over! although I envy you having one at all. Maybe next year I'll have nerved myself up enough to try biking on Irish roads... :)

Date: 2006-10-21 02:14 pm (UTC)Haven't had much luck recruiting a new workout partner--it's hard finding someone whose schedule matches mine. A friend is trying to jump start getting into a workout routine by signing up with a personal trainer, which is something I may look into if it works for him.

Date: 2006-10-21 08:36 pm (UTC)I joined for much the same reason you're thinking about it: in theory I feel like I ought to be ought and about being active instead, but during the harshest season (summer, here) that just doesn't happen.

Date: 2006-10-22 01:37 am (UTC)Years ago I had a great workout routine where I went twice a week to classes at the gym and then immediately went to Friendly's next door and ate a hot fudge sundae. Ah to be 29 again :-)

Date: 2006-10-22 04:07 pm (UTC)The geographic sense is important. I chose the gym I did more because it was three blocks from home than anything else.
