As soon as I saw the news I called my sister-in-law Natalia, since her brother Pablo is a pilot based in Santiago, Chile. It was good news--Pablo, his wife Lucia and their infant son Tincho are all okay, as is Natalia's Mom who was there visiting. Scared, of course, and not sure if the apartment building is still habitable, but all things considered it's as good as can be expected. Phew!

Really puts my whining about a broken garage door in perspective.

Good to hear, Patricia! When those first video clips started showing up, it was pretty terrifying.

This quake was many times stronger than the one that struck Haiti, but the death toll so far is, and will remain, far, far lower. On 1/12, they said a big part of the problem was that Haiti has no construction codes. Chile does, and it made a huge difference. Not so good for historical structures. And still terrifying.

Glad your family's okay!

From all accounts it was terrifying to live through, and those two minutes felt like forever.

That's exactly what Natalia said--huge difference in building standards and construction techniques, and you can see that in the results.

It' really much better news than it could have been.
