Turns out the Houston Astrodome is a very bad place to be in a hurricane so New Orleans evacuees are rapidly being shipped off elsewhere. Thousands of evacuees are being moved to Arkansas while others are apparently being moved into private housing or simply given plane tickets. Meanwhile folks along the Gulf Coast brace themselves and try to figure out where Rita is going.

Rita, by the way, could reach category 4 before end of day Wednesday.

On the wacky side of the news, apparently hurricane Katrina was caused by the Yakuza. Hmm, the things I didn't know.

Finally jennifer_dunne has posted her final lesson. I'm on deck tomorrow.

I was wondering from the start (okay, from the point when I actually looked at Houston on a map after Katrina) if that might not happen, and hoping it wouldn't. Being not only evacuated, but then evacuated from the haven one is sent to, seems more than anyone should have to deal with.

And turns out the roof of the Astrodome is far more fragile than the Superdome's...

I keep thinking of the children. They'd been enrolled in schools to try and provide them with some stability and now they are being uprooted again and dumped somewhere else. I can't imagine being a parent in this situation and trying to help your kids cope. Let's hope Arkansas or wherever they wind up turns out to be welcoming and secure.

Reminds me of when we had a tornado pass through here a few years back, a rare event for upstate New York. Although their home was undamaged, their neighbors were not so lucky and a friend's son was traumatized by the event. He insisted that the TV remain tuned to the Weather Channel at all times so they would know if another one was coming. She did her best to reassure him that he didn't need to worry, there wouldn't be another one. At school his teachers did the same since many of the students also shared his fears.

The second tornado struck a week later.

Now he was not only afraid, he was convinced his parents and teachers were liars.
