When contemplating the AFTER HOURS project, it occurs to me that jpsorrow and my greatest assets are our boundless ignorance and optimism.

A sample exchange from the editorial board:

Joshua: Anthologies are fun, I want to sell more!

Patricia: I've got lots of ideas on how to market this-- let's advertise via beer fans! Let's do signings at microbreweries and wine tastings!

Guardian angel: Um, shouldn't you be thinking about confirming the authors list and making sure everyone writes the best stories they can?

Joshua&Patricia: Pfffft!

In all seriousness, though, I think we make a good team. Joshua is the dreamer, while I'm the OCD-organizing type, so between the two of us, we've got it covered.

toujours gai, archy, toujours gai...

Love the new Ur-pic.

Isn't it cool? It's part of a fresco from Pompeii, showing a tavern scene.

[identity profile] jjschwabach.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
It really is cool -- or does that mean it's hot?

Pub crawl! Pub crawl!

[identity profile] pbray.livejournal.com 2009-12-09 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Um yes, that is in the planning stage, a combination pub crawl/scavenger hunt where authors are stationed in various bars and folks must collect tokens to prove they've met us.

My first antho, I did that (two guesses which I was and the first guess doesn't count). Second antho we were both detail-cachers, and it was the simplest project I've ever worked on. So I decded to quit while I was ahead. *grin*

And the only problem with the scavenger hunt pub crawl is that it requires the authors to remain (relatively) sober, and there's just no fun in that!

[identity profile] pbray.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Sober? Who said anything about being sober? Spoilsport!

I think the rules for the pubcrawl are simple-- to get the token, folks must either buy a book or buy us a drink. We'll either be hammered or hit the Locus list. Or maybe both :-)

You at least have to be more sober than this woman:

I second the beer. Hell, if the timing is right, I'd fly out to promote with beer. (Good beer. Not that B*dw**s*r stuff you have over there.)

[identity profile] pbray.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Trust me, I know where to get very good beer that will meet your requirements. I tend to drink microbrews-- current favorites include a local Nut Brown Ale that goes really well with cold weather. (In warmer weather I lean more towards IPAs, unless it's Florida hot in which case a nice wheat beer will do the trick.)

And yes, we'll figure out promotion angles, and if you make it to our side of the pond you can join whatever we've got going on, or we'll make up an event for you. The good part about this kind of project is that for any large US convention, there will be at least a few of the contributors there, so we can have a rotating party, as it were.

That would be very cool. And given that Worldcon is in Australia in 2010, which it too far for me, I am intending to do at least one of the big US cons instead. Which would you suggest as a good one?

[identity profile] pbray.livejournal.com 2009-12-10 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite con is the World Fantasy Convention, which is in Columbus, Ohio in 2010, and San Diego, California in 2011. [livejournal.com profile] jpsorrow and I usually attend that one.

Other cons that we really like are Boskone (Boston, in February), Norwescon in Seattle (usually April), and Balticon (Baltimore, last weekend of May).

Other con attendance varies-- my day job constrains the weekends I can be away, while Joshua's teaching schedule means it's easier for him to go to local cons during the academic year, but he can travel further afield during the the summer.

Oh, and we'll definitely be hitting the ComicCon that's closest to the book's release date, either San Diego or NYC or perhaps both.

I was certainly thinking seriously of WFC in Ohio, as the marquis gets sent out to Milford, OH for work quite often and we could combine the two.

I missed WFC this year, so am definitely looking forward to being able to go to Ohio next year.
