There ought to be more of us

Many people indulge in retail therapy but mine takes a unique form. When I feel sad, I buy books. And when I feel happy... I also buy books. ("Damn, that conversation was upsetting, I guess I better hie me to a bookstore and fetch home treasure to comfort me!" "Yay, that's so cool, what I need to celebrate is to buy some books!")

If more people were like me, the publishing industry would be well on its way to recovery.

Now if only I could find time to read all the books that I buy....

That's me, too. Books are the best therapy.

They really are. I've felt this way ever since I was a child, which, perhaps, explains why I became a writer...

THIS THIS THIS

this is why I generally have a book (or three) in my car for when traffic jams happen. I remember being caught in one for like 2 hours, everyone else was getting upset/angry. I just shrugged, pulled out my book and didn't notice the passage of time!

(its also why I don't like books on tape/cd when I'm driving -- I so lose myself into the book that I forget to pay attention to the road!)

My standard for buying a purse is "Can I fit a paperback in here?" Because, of course, you need to be able to have a book precisely for those occasions.

Buying a book is a mitzvah. Reading a book is a mitzvah. Two mitzvahs for the purchase of one!

:-)

Some days I think of it as going to the shelter and adopting homeless books.

Therein lies the kicker, unfortunately.

In my next life, perhaps.

Methinks I ought to add a section in the will about that. All of the books sitting in the TBR pile go to...

Books are the best therapy.

Alas, there will never be time to defeat the TBR pile. Especially not when adding books to the pile is a common occurrence.

I think they breed when my back is turned.

I do the same thing!

I suspect our obsessive love for books is part of being writers.

*smiles* I feel your pain, hon! There's a stack of books next to my bed waiting for my attention, and what did I do this past weekend? Spent my Amazon gift card...on more books.

It's a sickness, but I don't want to get well. :D

[identity profile] pbray.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's incurable! It's a good kind of sickness, the way some bacteria is actually good for you! I could stop at any time, I just choose not to!

Send 'em to me ;-)!

I'll read 'em during chemo and tell you what they say...

Mine! Mine! All mine! (Just ask [livejournal.com profile] fireun how successful she's been at prying books out of my hands.)

[identity profile] jmward14.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
After we had the living room painted in October, I reorganized the books. I sent enough to storage, I was able to fit all the TBR pile into shelves. They filled an entire six-foot IKEA bookcase. Oops.
IOW, I feel your... Pain is totally the wrong word. Obsession?

[identity profile] pbray.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
We book hoarders must stick together! At least until we get our own reality show and they stage an intervention and scan all our TBRs onto our new tablets...
