Farewell 2007, Hello 2008

Wishing everyone a happy and prosperous New Year!

Reflecting back on 2007, earlier this month I posted my annual writing summary.

Last year I promised myself that I would try to make more time for reading. I'd set a goal of a book a week, but even though I finished up one last book yesterday, I still fell far short. For each book that I managed to read from cover to cover, I have at least two more that I've never opened, or did open and tossed aside after the opening chapters failed to hold my interest.

Not to mention all the reference books that I skimmed but did not read in their entirety.

That said, my
2007 Reading List

DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER by Jeff Lindsay
DEARLY DEVOTED DEXTER by Jeff Lindsay
SHARPER THAN A SERPENT'S TOOTH by Simon R. Green
DEAD BEAT by Jim Butcher
BLOOD BOUND by Patricia Briggs
MOONSHINE by Rob Thurman
SMOKE AND ASHES by Tanya Huff
COYOTE DREAMS C.E. Murphy
UNSHAPELY THINGS by Mark Del Franco
MAGIC BITES by Ilona Andrews
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS by J.K Rowling
FORENSICS DEMYSTIFIED by Barry Fisher, David Fisher and Jason Kolowski
FORENSIC CASEBOOK: The Science of Crime Scene Investigation by Ngaire E. Genge
GREYWALKER by Kat Richardson
CAST IN SECRET by Michelle Sagara
DEXTER IN THE DARK by Jeff Lindsay
ENDGAME by Kristine Smith
WEBMAGE by Kelly McCullough
CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION (9th edition) by Swanson, Chamelin, Territo and Taylor.
HEART OF STONE by C.E. Murphy
WRAITH by Phaedra Weldon
DOG DAYS by John Levitt
IRON KISSED by Patricia Briggs

Looking at the list, I feel that there ought to be more titles on there, ones that I forgot to record. It's possible, but doubtful. I try to console myself with the remembrance that I also wrote 160K words this year, and took a college course in Criminal Investigations. Oh, and there's that pesky day job which cuts into my reading time as well.

I really liked the first one. The second book was good, and the third one I didn't care for, in part because it was a bit too metaphysical for me (meditations on the nature of evil and whether it is a separate entity or inherent in all men) but mostly because of plot developments involving young children which happen to push one of my buttons.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tv show--it's interesting to note that season two of Dexter took the character in a very different direction than the books.

Hmm. Good things to know. Thanks! It's useful also to know that the series and books diverged considerably.

Have a happy New Year!
