Homesteading
While washing dishes after supper I noticed that a large (but not deep) hole had been dug in the freshly mowed grass, and next to that hole was a rabbit. The rabbit, who feigned innocence as is the custom of his breed, nonetheless spent the next few hours either sitting in the hole with his nose twitching or hopping around on the grass nearby.
I've just checked, and it appears that he's settled in to spend the night. Curled up in the middle of the lawn, no shelter except for the fact that the yard itself is fenced (enough to keep out my neighbors' dogs, though bunnies can squeeze under if they want.)
I've had rabbits dig burrows in the back corner of the yard, before the weeds were cleared out. But this spot is only a few feet from the house, close enough that I startled him when I opened up the windows.
Overall I don't object to his presence--the only one who will mind if he becomes a permanent resident is the guy who mows my lawn. But I'm not quite sure this is the best of places for a rabbit to make his home. Still I have to give him credit for trying.
And for totally disrupting my plans to put fertilizer and weed killer down tomorrow. Heaven forfend that I should give my new tenant indigestion.

We often have rabbits in the neighborhood, there's enough bracken and brush around, and it's not unusual for me to see a rabbit every now and then. But one deciding that the perfect napping spot is the middle of my lawn is a tad unusual.
We'll see if he comes back tonight.

And, of course, since I didn't put down weedkiller, there will be plenty of dandelions for him to snack upon.
