Oh no

A small plane has crashed into a high-rise building in Manhattan.

I walked into the lunchroom (where MSNBC is on TV) at 2:50 -- just after it happened. Struck speechless. We've been following it since, and they are saying it was a helicopter, probably either just leaving or trying to get to a nearby popular helipad by the water. And that normally they just crash into the water. But not terrorism. Which is only phew in that it's not terrorism, and doesn't change that there are people trapped and afraid.

Still amazing how dead in my tracks the news stopped me, with all kinds of shivers.

Yikes!

You're right, Deb, unfortunately, the first thought these days is not accident, but something more horrifically deliberate.

And it doesn't help that the initial news reports on aircraft disasters always get details wrong in their rush to put the news on the air.

So far the biggest controversy appears to be fixed wing versus helicopter, with contradictory quotes coming from various spokesmen.

The first picture made me nauseous--just a shot of the Manhattan skyline and black smoke billowing over it.

It seems probable that this was indeed an accident rather than terrorism, but I suspect I'm not the only one who's nerves are still twitchy. Hard to imagine what it's like to be down in NYC today.

They keep changing the story and it's driving me NUTS listening to the news. And yes, that first image just stopped me -- I couldn't stop watching. And the weirdest thing is seeing everybody keeping working all around me and remembering the feel of That Day superimposed over today. *shudders*
